Val Verde County Appraisal Review Board (ARB)

Val Verde County’s ARB plays a critical role in reviewing and correcting the tax roll initially generated by Val Verde County Appraisal District. Every county in Texas has an appraisal review board. (Note: the exception is Potter and Randall counties which share one appraisal district and appraisal review board.)

The appraisal review board members are supposed to be “separate and apart” from the appraisal district. They swear an oath to be impartial. Their ability to impartially hear and judge property tax disputes solves the second highest number of tax protests, second only to informal hearings.

How Many Days did Val Verde County ARB Hold Hearings?

Val Verde County Appraisal Review Board members are required to hold hearings until they have completed their work for the year. The total number of days of ARB hearings in Texas in 2018 totaled 3,550. Thirty-four counties had only one day of hearings and thirty-eight counties had only 2 days of ARB hearings. In 2019 alone, 26 days of ARB hearings were held in Val Verde County.

ARB Compensation

Appraisal review board members are paid in almost all counties. Over half (160) of the counties paid the lowest paid ARB members $100 per day or less (this data for 2018); another 56 paid $101 to 150 per day. The highest amounts paid to ARB members per day in 2018 ranged from $200 to $3,200 (34 counties in this range; Brazos reported $3,200 per day which may be an error).

The median pay for ARB members per day in Val Verde County in 2019 was $125.
